Law and Economics Theory Conference

An annual event that rotates to different law schools and brings together leading law and economics theorists to discuss their scholarship.

Our Clean Energy Future

Hosted by Michigan Law’s Environmental and Energy Law Program, “Our Clean Energy Future” will convene students, professors, lawyers, government representatives, and industry leaders to reflect on developments and innovations in clean energy. The two-day conference will focus on decarbonization across industries and fields. The Our Clean Energy Future conference is free and open to the public. Advance registration is not required.

Social Movements, Human Rights, and Constitutional Transformations: Views From Latin America

Michigan Law’s Transnational Law Conference addresses subjects of international and comparative legal issues, bringing outstanding scholars and practitioners to Michigan each year to discuss an important issue, meet our students and faculty, see our law school, and contribute to the intellectual life of our community. 

This semester’s conference, “Social Movements, Human Rights, and Constitutional Transformations: Views from Latin America,” is co-organized by Law School Professors Rebecca Scott and Samuel Erman, ’07, and Sueann Caulfield, professor of history in U-M’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.

Environmental and Energy Law Lecture Series

The Environmental and Energy Law Lecture series offers Michigan Law students and the broader community an opportunity to learn from leaders of environmental advocacy, government, and industry and contributes to debates over the environmental and energy challenges facing our nation and the world. Students often meet privately with speakers during their visits to Michigan Law. Some lecturers are co-sponsored by other schools and programs at the University of Michigan. All lectures are open to the public. Admission is free.

Bishop Lecture in International Law: Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf, International Court of Justice

The William W. Bishop Lecture is the marquee international and comparative law lecture at Michigan Law. 

This year’s Bishop Lecture will be given by Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf of the International Court of Justice. Currently, he also is the president of the International Court of Justice, which is based in The Hague, The Netherlands. He was elected as judge to the court in November 2008 and re-elected in November 2017. President Yusuf is a member of the Institut de Droit International, a former chief legal counsel to various intergovernmental organizations, including UNESCO and UNIDO. He is the founder of the African Institute of International Law in Arusha, Tanzania, and of the African Yearbook of International Law.

Constitution Day Lecture: “Presidential Accountability after Trump v. United States

The University of Michigan’s annual commemoration of Constitution Day is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost. This year’s speaker is Jack Goldsmith, the Learned Hand Professor of Law at Harvard University.

Junior Faculty Roundtable

Junior faculty are invited to present a draft paper to a small group of people consisting of other early career faculty at Michigan Law, other Michigan Law faculty, and invited outside participants. Each participating junior faculty member will be able to invite one senior person in their field from another school to come to Ann Arbor to be a formal commentator on their draft and participate in the day’s events. 

Representing the United States in the Supreme Court: A Conversation with US Solicitor General Elizabeth B. Prelogar

Elizabeth Barchas Prelogar serves as the fourth-ranking individual at the Department of Justice. As solicitor general, she is responsible for conducting and supervising all Supreme Court litigation on behalf of the United States. 

She joins Professor Leah Litman, 10, in a conversation about her role and the Supreme Court.
