The University of Michigan Law School
Terms and Conditions of Your Financial Aid Offer
Your acceptance of the disbursements from your financial aid award(s) indicates that you have read and understand the terms below.
- Your acceptance of your financial aid award(s) authorizes the Law School Financial Aid Office to apply scholarships and/or grants, if applicable, and loans to your University account to pay tuition, fees, and University charges, including housing charges.
- To be eligible for institutional financial aid, you must be enrolled full-time for at least ten credit hours. Exceptions to this policy are rare and must be approved in advance by the Office of Student Life and the Law School Financial Aid Office.
- Financial aid is capped at the cost of attendance. You may not have more aid in scholarships (institutional or external), grants, loans (federal or private), or other financial support than the cost of attendance. If your aid exceeds your cost of attendance, we will first reduce any loans you have borrowed; if necessary, we will reduce institutional grants and scholarships.
- Your merit or need-based scholarship may be reduced to the cost of attendance if you receive a tuition waiver or tuition support through the University of Michigan, the post 9/11 GI Bill, or any other tuition support or waiver program.
- You must inform the Law School Financial Aid Office in writing no later than one week after you are awarded assistance not previously disclosed or listed on your award notice.
- You must inform the Law School Financial Aid Office in writing should you withdraw from the Law School or drop to less than full-time.
- You must use your financial aid resources solely for educationally related expenses incurred during the academic period for which they are authorized.
- Should you fail to meet the terms of this aid offer, you may be asked to repay all or part of the aid you received, and/or you may jeopardize your future eligibility for aid.
- This financial aid offer is granted only for the academic year listed on your award notice.
- If you receive scholarships or grants, the Office of Development and Alumni Relations may contact you to put you in touch with the donor(s) of your scholarship or grant funds. If requested, recipients of scholarships or grants must correspond with donors. Failure to do so by the requested deadline date will decrease or eliminate scholarship or grant assistance.
- Although a scholarship or grant does not impose a legal obligation to repay the funds, the Law School hopes that those who receive such funds will recognize that continuation of these programs for future students will depend upon donation, when the recipients are able to do so, of an amount at least equal to the assistance they were given.
- All the statements on any loan or financial aid documents are complete and correct to the best of your knowledge. You understand that any misrepresentation on your part may result in immediate cancellation and/or loan repayment.
- Student loans are to be used solely for educational expenses. All educational costs, including tuition and fees, housing charges, and any advances received against any loan may be deducted from your loan before any proceeds are given to you.
- You must report immediately to the Law School Financial Aid Office any change in enrollment status, marital status, financial status or additional forms of assistance as these may affect eligibility for loans.
- You may not be in default on any loan and have not borrowed in excess of the loan limits, under Title IV programs, at any institution. You must use all Title IV money received only for expenses related to your study at the University of Michigan Law School.
