You must reapply for loans each year. The recommended deadline for submitting your FAFSA is June 1.
The recommended submission date for your Grad PLUS or private loan application is after you have received your financial aid notice, but before July 15. You will receive your financial aid notice after the Regents approve the tuition rate in June. Late applicants run the risk of incurring late payment fees for past due tuition, and for those of you who borrow financial aid to cover living expenses, those funds might not be received by the first day of classes.
Complete and submit a 2025-2026 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
To apply for Direct Unsubsidized loans, complete the FAFSA at studentaid.gov. Your and your spouse’s information must be recorded on the FAFSA. Request that a copy of the FAFSA report be released to the University of Michigan Law School, code #E00506. (Note that the rest of the University of Michigan uses a different number.) Be sure to retain a copy of the completed form for your records.
Apply for a Grad PLUS/Private Loan.
If you need to borrow a Grad PLUS or private loan, a separate application is required. To apply for a Grad PLUS loan, please complete Michigan Law’s Grad PLUS loan application, and not the one on the StudentAid.gov website. Since credit approvals expire, continuing students should apply for Grad PLUS loans no earlier than June 1, and we will begin processing applications in July.
