About Me

Name

Takeshi Yamamoto

Prior Education

University of Tokyo (LLB, 2014); Legal Training and Research Institute of the Supreme Court of Japan (2017)

Before Ann Arbor

I lived in Kobe, Japan (famous for Kobe beef!).

Before My LLM Year

I was an associate attorney at Nishimura & Asahi (N&A), one of the largest law firms in Japan, and handled various domestic and cross-border cases such as corporate scandals, corporate litigation, and business regulation matters mainly related to manufacturing, infrastructure, telecommunications, and healthcare business sectors.

Biggest Hesitation About the LLM Year

Paper exams, which take hours, confused me at first. I worked through past questions repeatedly to familiarize myself with them!

My Time at Michigan Law

Why I Chose Michigan Law

The small LLM class size and diverse backgrounds of classmates from about 20 different countries were quite attractive to me. Also, the kindness and human touch of the admission process drew me to Michigan Law.

My Favorite Class

Corporate Compliance. I enjoyed learning about the latest trends in corporate compliance in the United States and discussing them with classmates who have knowledge of various industries, such as accounting, healthcare, and tech.

The Best Thing About Michigan Law

All LLM students, JD students, and professors are really unique. I love the diverse environment with people from many different backgrounds. I am also a big fan of the Law School’s beautiful buildings.

The Best Things About Ann Arbor

There are many great things about Ann Arbor. First, there are so many green parks, which my 4-year-old daughter enjoys very much. Besides that, I love the friendly and warm people, the international environment, and the vibrant atmosphere of the University and downtown.

What Surprised Me Most About Michigan Law

I was really impressed by the many social activities organized by Michigan Law School students. My family and I have joined several clubs and enjoyed many social events, such as bonfires and Halloween events.

The Most Difficult Thing About the LLM Year

Time management! Balancing childcare and schoolwork is really challenging.

Fun Stuff

When I’m Not Studying

I frequent the University of Michigan’s Museum of Art. I like many of the exhibits on Asian art.

My Favorite Way to De-stress

Going for a run at Argo Park.

LLM Extracurricular Activities

I did pro bono for the Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse. By helping to build a database of judgments, I gained an understanding of civil litigation in the United States.

Favorite Book

Among the books I have read recently, I enjoyed Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life by Luke Burgis. The book highlights the critical importance of understanding and managing one’s desires to balance work and family happiness.

Favorite Movie

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the best among movies I have seen recently. I was thrilled to see it with my daughter at a movie theater just outside of Ann Arbor.

Favorite TV Shows

The Simpsons since I was a kid. It was the TV show that got me interested in life in the United States.

Favorite Band

I have listened to Steely Dan’s music since I was in high school (even though it was a very old band).

Favorite Beverage

I have loved root beer since I came to the United States. Its unique flavor is addictive.

Favorite Food from Home

Takoyaki, which is octopus wrapped in wheat flour-based batter and served with sauce. It is a very tasty and highly recommended dish!

Favorite Food in the United States

I really love the orange chicken at Panda Express. This flavor is not found in Japan.
