About Me

Name

Hendrik Flindt

Prior Education

George-August-Universität Gottingen (Erste Juristische Prufüng, 2024).

Before Ann Arbor

I grew up in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Before My LLM Year

I graduated from the University of Göttingen in September 2024. I then worked as a research assistant at a corporate law firm in Düsseldorf for almost a year.

My Time at Michigan Law

Why I Chose Michigan Law

Michigan Law was the perfect overall package for me. I was looking for a top 14 law school that also offered a small, close-knit LLM program. With only 23 LLM students in my year, Michigan fit that criterion perfectly.

I also wanted to experience a classic American college town, and Ann Arbor delivers exactly that. The on-campus Law School dormitory and the broad, flexible curriculum with extensive freedom in course selection sealed my decision.

What Makes Michigan Law Special

What truly sets Michigan Law apart is the sense of community, both among students and between students and faculty. The small LLM cohort means that you quickly build friendships with people from all over the world.

Thanks to the size of the program, LLM students are fully integrated into the law school and have close, day-to-day contact with JD students, something that enriches the experience enormously. I have made many great friends among the JDs, which has given me a much deeper understanding of American legal culture and student life.

My Favorite Classes

Contracts with Professor Jeffery Zhang.

What Surprised Me Most About Michigan Law

How friendly and supportive everyone is! As an LLM student, I was never treated like an outsider, but rather like part of the community. This made it easy for me to adjust to the new environment and instantly feel at home.

My Favorite Memory from My LLM Year

Picking just one favorite memory feels nearly impossible. Whether it was road trips with new friends, the electric atmosphere of football game days, celebrating the University’s national basketball championship, or spending Thanksgiving at the home of one of my JD friends, every one of those moments was special in its own way. It was a year full of experiences I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

The Most Difficult Thing About the LLM Year

The biggest adjustment was getting used to the American law school teaching style. Coming from Germany, where large lecture-format classes are the norm, cold calling and the extensive reading assignments required for every single class were entirely new for me.

The Best Things About Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor is a small, walkable college town. However, it has many excellent restaurants, bars, and cafés. Another unique aspect of Ann Arbor is the strong student spirit that can be experienced every day, but especially on game days, when the entire town is covered in maize and blue.

If I Could Time Travel, I Would Give Myself This Advice at the Start of My LLM Year

Don’t worry! You’re going to have the time of your life, meet lots of great friends, and create memories lasting a lifetime.
