As you make a decision about housing for the upcoming academic year, consider living in the residential section of the Law Quadrangle. Convenience, camaraderie, and safety are only a few of the attractions of the historic and newly renovated Lawyers Club.
What is the Lawyers Club?
Exclusively housing JD and LLM students, the Lawyers Club provides a built-in network of friends and a diverse set of neighbors in the midst of the Law Quadrangle. You will be able to take easy advantage of the Law School’s resources as well as enjoy the community of 227 fellow law students.
In addition to the advantages of proximity and tradition, a Lawyers Club contract allows you to budget with no financial unknowns. Your contract provides for room and board in the form of 2 meals per day, (daily except Saturdays, for a total of 12 meals per week), a furnished room, private or semi-private bathroom, all utilities, and wireless internet. The Lawyers Club contract is concurrent with the Law School’s academic calendar and covers both fall and winter terms. The Lawyers Club contract does not include summer months; thus, students who leave Ann Arbor for work will not incur rent obligations. (Students who wish to stay will be able to find alternative housing through Ann Arbor’s robust summer sublet market.)
The Lawyers Club provides amenities such as air conditioning, elevators, study lounges, kitchenettes, and club rooms for small social gatherings. Each residential room comes equipped with its own refrigerator/freezer and microwave oven. The Lawyers Club is protected by life safety equipment including smoke and heat detectors, fire suppression sprinklers, electronic door locks and ID-card entry at all exterior doors. The Lawyers Club is 100% smoke-free and pet-free (with the exception of pre-approved, documented service and/or assistance animals). The Lawyers Club does not provide on-site parking, but commuter parking lots are an option offered by the University.
Lawyers Club Services and Programs
Many services of the Lawyers Club are available to all members of the Law School community. The Main Desk acts as a nexus of information for residents and provides services such as selling meal tickets, providing lock out assistance to residents, package processing and pick-up, guest room reservations , coordinating laundry services.
-
Guest Rooms
The Club rents seven guest rooms with private baths for the convenience of students, faculty, and guests. Advance reservations are required and may be made up to three months in advance.
Please contact the desk (734.764.1116) during weekday business hours.
-
Dining
Complete lunches and dinners may be purchased at the Club. Non-residents may purchase individual meals or may open a prepaid debit system account called Blue Bucks. Blue Bucks allows students to eat meals as they wish and have the reduced fee deducted from their account through using their MCard. Blue Bucks is a University-wide system and may also be used for other purchases on or near campus.
Please see the Club’s Main Desk or U-M Housing for further details and specific meal prices. Meals are served for lunch and dinner daily, except Saturday, when there are no meals.
-
Take a Professor to Lunch
This program, sponsored by the Law School’s Office of Life, allows students to invite a guest faculty member to join them for lunch in the Club’s dining room. OSL covers the cost of lunch for non-resident students and guest professors.
Students can make a request by emailing the Club’s Leadership Team at [email protected] to pre-arrange. Students should provide the date of lunch, professor name, and group count (Lawyers Club Residents do not need to be included in this total as they have a meal plan).
A minimum of 48 hours is required so that the proper entry passes can be issued for admittance. -
Brown Bag Passes
Club residents may sponsor a non-resident who brings their lunch from home and wishes to be their guest in the dining room.
The main desk will issue a guest pass to the sponsor, which allows the guest to bring their bag lunch into the dining hall and receive a complimentary beverage. Brown Bag passes are available Monday through Friday during lunch only.
First year students who do not yet have a sponsor may see the Lawyers Club Leadership Team at the Club’s Main Desk.
-
Reserving Event Space
Student groups may inquire about reserving public spaces in the Club for meetings, receptions, etc. All such events must be approved by the Club’s Director and meet restrictions for room capacity, catering, security arrangements, etc.
Please see the director a minimum of two weeks in advance.
Living in the Lawyers Club
The Lawyers Club is an historic residence hall with generations of successful Michigan Law alumni. A result of the beneficence of William W. Cook and Charles T. Munger, the Lawyers Club offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to live in the iconic Michigan Law Quadrangle.
Residents of the Lawyers Club are proximate to Hutchins Hall, Legal Research, Jeffries Hall and enjoy all the benefits of the collegiate gothic structures. Completely renovated in 2013, with design by Hartman Cox of Washington DC; the Club’s private rooms with en-suite private baths house students from all three years of law school and many LLM s. The Lawyers Club is also available as a dining option for law students who have chosen off-campus housing. The Lawyers Club is not open for housing during summer term.
The Lawyers Club space is completely smoke-free, pet-free (with exception to documented service and assistance animals) and provides single-occupancy spaces with contracts for the full academic term. Dining is a required element of the Lawyers Club lease and a 12-meal per week contract is included in the contract fee.
