About Me

Name

Viktoria Baumgartl

Prior Education

University of Vienna (magister juris, 2020)

Before Ann Arbor

I grew up in Vienna, Austria.

Before My LLM Year

I worked at the Vienna University of Economics and Business as a PhD researcher and lecturer at the Institute for EU and International Law for three years.

My Time at Michigan Law

Why I Chose Michigan Law

The main reason for me joining Michigan Law was the small size of the LLM class, which really stood out compared to other LLM programs in the United States. This ensures LLM students are truly included in the Law School community, rather than attending classes which are designed only for LLMs.

I also was really interested in the curriculum and the seminars offered, and I knew that I would like to be in a place with easy access to outdoor activities and nature.

What Makes Michigan Law Special

The faculty and students are really nice and supportive! There is a really laid-back and super friendly environment in the Law School, which I enjoy.

My Favorite Class

It is hard to choose one, but Comparative Human Rights Law by Professor McCrudden is one of the best classes I have taken during my time here in Michigan.

The Most Difficult Thing About the LLM Year

There is a high weekly workload, mostly in the form of readings or short papers for each class. The system is quite different from what I was used to at Austrian universities, so it took some time to adjust to that. But, after some time, I’ve learned to manage my time more efficiently here, which will definitely benefit me in the future.

The Best Things About Ann Arbor

Definitely the Farmers Market on Saturdays. It has such a relaxed vibe and really great and affordable food. Next to the Farmers Market are also some really nice cafes, which round up a perfect Saturday experience.

If I Could Time Travel, I Would Give Myself This Advice at the Start of My LLM Year

It is okay to feel overwhelmed in the beginning by all the options and offers the University provides—almost everyone does. Don’t take everything too seriously, and give yourself time to adjust.

Extracurricular Activities

International Law Society and articles editor for the Michigan Journal of International Law

When I’m Not Studying

I’m taking a walk in the Arb, going cross-country skiing in one of the many parks around Ann Arbor, or reading in one of the cafes in Kerrytown.
