Jerold H. Israel

Jerold H. Israel is the Alene and Allan F. Smith Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of Michigan. He is a nationally recognized authority on criminal law and criminal procedure.

Israel joined the faculty at the University of Michigan Law School in 1961 and took emeritus status in 1996.

He is a co-author of the most frequently cited criminal procedure treatise, now in its 3rd edition, with seven volumes. He also co-authored an eminent and widely adopted criminal procedure course book, Modern Criminal Procedure. Now in its 12th edition, that book has been used in more than 100 law schools by an estimated 400,000 law students. Israel also is a co-author of a Hornbook on criminal procedure, Concise Hornbooks on criminal investigations and post-investigation procedures, a Nutshell on constitutional criminal procedure, a collection of the leading constitutional decisions in criminal procedure, a course book on white-collar crime, and a Nutshell on white-collar crime.

He is the author of numerous law review articles and several bar and government commission reports relating to the legal regulation of the criminal justice system.
