Jennifer Z. Belveal, ’95, is an adjunct professor at Michigan Law. A seasoned trial lawyer, she has 30 years of white-collar criminal law experience leading independent investigations, responses to grand jury subpoenas, and other government enforcement proceedings, crisis management, and bet-the-company litigation. Most recently, she led Foley & Lardner’s Government Enforcement Defense & Investigations Practice in Detroit, representing companies, boards, and individuals in internal and government investigations, as well as complex litigation involving both civil and criminal allegations.

Belveal is known for finding solutions to difficult and delicate problems. Clients and lawyers in Michigan and nationwide recognize her as a go-to lawyer for navigating uncharted situations. She is a sought-after speaker by her peers on federal and state matters across a spectrum of industries, including automotive, manufacturing, financial transactions, securities, health care, public corruption, environmental laws, government contracting, shareholder liability, and data privacy and security. Throughout her career, Belveal has guided other lawyers in legal ethics, both formally and informally. She has written extensively on both legal and ethical issues.

Belveal has received many accolades over her career, including being the first woman in Michigan to receive the coveted Band 1 ranking from Chambers and Partners in Litigation: White-Collar Crime & Government Investigations, as well as recognition as a Best Lawyer in America and Michigan Super Lawyer, among others.

She is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, former co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Women in White Collar Subcommittee, former board member for the American Bar Association’s annual National Institute on White Collar Crime, former chair of the Michigan Chapter of the Women’s White Collar Defense Association, former co-chair of the Cambridge Forum on White-Collar Crime & Regulatory Enforcement, and former co-chair of the Michigan State Bar Pro Bono Committee.
