Jason Levien, ’97, an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan Law School, currently serves on the Major League Soccer Board of Governors. He previously served on the NBA Board of Governors.
Levien, who has held a variety of leadership roles in professional sports across four continents, has led the acquisition of sports team properties in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Soccer, and the English Premier League. He has been an investor, board member, and managing partner of these organizations. This includes building award-winning public-private partnerships for the development of indoor and outdoor stadiums, as well as launching teams and leagues and the negotiation and implementation of media rights and corporate partnerships.
Since 2012, Levien has served as CEO and co-chairman of DC United, where he oversees the club, including sporting, real estate, business development, mergers and acquisitions, and entertainment. In 2018, he led the building of the club’s stadium, Audi Field, and ancillary development including entertainment, retail, and residential apartment buildings in the soon-to-be most densely populated neighborhood of Washington DC.
In 2019, he launched Loudoun United, a team in the United Soccer League Championship, and led the development of its stadium, Segra Field, as well as the building of the Inova Performance Center in Leesburg, Virginia.
Previously, Levien led the negotiations on behalf of investment groups acquiring controlling stakes in the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, where he was co-owner and board member, and the Memphis Grizzlies, where he oversaw operations as its CEO and managing partner.
Levien worked as an attorney in Washington, DC, for Williams & Connolly before founding Levien Sports Representation, which represented professional athletes in the NBA, NFL, and across the globe. He later founded an investment firm focused on real estate, media, technology, sports, hospitality, and health care.
Levien serves as chairman of the Brisbane Bullets in Australia’s National Basketball League and as co-managing owner of Swansea City Football Club in the English Football League.
He has served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law and has been awarded faculty fellowship appointments at Michigan Law and Harvard Law School. He serves on the board of Children’s National Medical Center.
