She previously worked as a trial public defender for the Washtenaw County Office of the Public Defender and for the Wisconsin State Public Defender Agency. Before becoming a public defender, Lawton served as a judicial law clerk for Justice Peter J. Maassen of the Alaska Supreme Court and as a staff law clerk to the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
Born and raised in Michigan, Lawton graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 2015, where she had the pleasure of belonging to the inaugural class of MDefenders.
