Please join us for a lecture commemorating Constitution Day. Guy-Uriel E. Charles, Charles Ogletree, Jr. Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race & Justice at Harvard Law School, will speak on “Louisiana v. Callais: The Constitutional Transformation of Democracy and Racial Equality.”
In Louisiana v. Callais, the Supreme Court delivered the final blow to the Voting Rights Act as an effective antidiscrimination and antimajoritarian safeguard of American democracy. Callais represents the culmination of a constitutional transformation of the Court’s voting-rights and race jurisprudence, more than a decade in the making. Professor Charles examines that transformation and situates Callais within the Supreme Court’s broader project of unraveling the institutional and doctrinal foundations of antidiscrimination law, not just the VRA.
