This course examines how film as popular culture depicts women, society, law and the dialogue among them. Viewing films from different cultures, we will explore the mutual influences between society’s underlying myth of womanhood, women’s real life experiences, cultural norms (including ‘The Law’) and popular works of art. The purpose of the course is to develop critical skills to assess, analyze and better understand cultural mechanisms through which society, women and law are constantly negotiated. We will apply both literary and legal anlyses and address ‘positive law’ as well as wider dimensions of the legal world. The cultures visited will include, in addition to the U.S., Japan (through the classical film “Rashomon”), Weimar Germany (through the film “Pandora’s Box”), England (via Hitchcock’s early film “Blackmail”), and Spain (via the postmodern film “High Heels”). Each student will be required to present and/or submit a written summary of an article, participate in class discussion and write a 15-20 page paper.
