The Sociology of Law seminar will be taught every other week over two terms. Background reading for the seminar and early discussions will be Roger Cotterall, The Sociology of Law, and Richard Lempert and Joseph Sanders, An Invitation to Law and Social Science. During the fall semester we will read a number of books reporting socio-legal research and discuss possible student research projects. During the winter term students will report on their research activities. Research projects may, but need not be, empirical or based on primary source material. Theoretical syntheses of secondary sources are acceptable. A paper reporting research results is required for credit. The seminar may be used to explore the feasibility of writing a dissertation on socio-legal topic or to work toward the preparation of a thesis prospectus. (If you sign up for the seminar feel free to let the instructor know what topics you would enjoy reading about in the fall term.)
