Personal and Subject Matter Jurisdiction
This course will examine the rules governing the exercise of personal
jurisdiction by state and federal courts as well as the basic tenets of subject matter jurisdiction in the federal courts. We will also study the famous Erie doctrine, which determines the law to be applied by federal courts when they sit in diversity. This material is foundational for attorneys practicing civil litigation. Note that this course differs from the Jurisdiction and Choice of Law course in that we will not study either choice of law or recognition of judgments.
