During the last century’s worth of technological change, copyright law has come to feature special, technical rules to deal with the music industry and related media platforms. We will study some of the famous controversies in the history of the music industry, from the invention of the piano roll to the dawn of the radio industry to the battle over file-sharing. We will also study current policy issues facing the industry and policymakers. The course readings will mainly consist of scholarly works, judicial opinions, and popular accounts of the music industry; pairs of students will present each week’s readings to the group. Students will write term papers of 25-30 pages on topics of their own choosing.
