Introduction to the basics of Japanese law and legal system; transplantation of Western legal system after Meiji Restoration in 1867, US influence after WW2, civil law tradition, statutory interpretation, court system, legal profession, legislative process, new and old civil procedure, civil code (property, contract, torts, family law), commercial code, constitution, administrative law, etc. The course puts emphasis on civil side as against criminal side. I’ll add some sociological and economic perspectives.
