Over 120 countries have competition or antitrust laws today, up from just a handful a few decades ago. Although these laws often look similar on paper, their application often differs considerably from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, reflecting differentiated national norms on economic, ideological, political, social, and historical questions. For multinational businesses considering mergers, joint ventures, marketing strategies, product development, and other key business questions, the plethora of antitrust laws governing their business around the world presents growing challenges of consistency and coordination. This course will examine the fundamental assumptions of competition laws around the world, drivers of legal and policy differences, and key strategic questions for businesses, regulators, and other stakeholders.
