Students may elect to enroll in this externship for one credit per semester, up to a total of two semesters. Students will be required to make themselves available to handle personal protection order cases (and any related legal work) through the Family Law Project (FLP). FLP is a law student project, operated by Legal Services of Southeastern Michigan. Students interview clients, prepare legal documents and represent clients in their efforts to obtain personal protection orders against their domestic partners. Students are supervised by a licensed attorney, employed by Legal Services of Southeastern Michigan. To receive credit for the externship, student must spend at least 40 hours per semester working for FLP. They must attend regularly scheduled office hours as established by the supervising attorney. Students must submit to the Law School Clinic Coordinator a midterm and end-of-term report, which should both report on their experiences and reflect on legal and ethical issues which arose throughout the term. Finally, students must fulfill all of the reasonable requirements of the supervising attorney to successfully complete legal work initiated during the course of the term. The course will be recorded as an “externship” credit for graduation requirement purposes and thus count against the 12 credit clinic/externship maximum for graduation. The course will be graded as mandatory pass/fail by the Clinic Coordinator. To enroll, students must have completed or be currently enrolled in the Domestic Violence Seminar and Trial Practice Workshop.
