This seminar is intended to provide an introduction to the study of the European Convention (and its protocols), and an opportunity to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the mechanisms established in Europe for the international protection of human rights. We shall look at the history of the convention, the development of the procedures and jurisprudence of the Commission and the Court, and the nature and scope of the rights given protection under the Convention. We shall also consider the potential future of the Convention in the enlarging community of the member states of the Council of Europe. Students will present papers on selected topics.
