Chinese Legal System
This seminar will offer an introduction to the legal system of the People’s Republic of China. Topics will include the historical and ideological foundations of modern Chinese socialist law; legal institutions and personnel; constitutional law and definitions of human rights; law as protector of state and society: crime and punishment; dispute resolution; evolving approaches to contract, market, and ownership; and the use of law to transform society: women’s rights in transition. Students will be required to complete a seminar research paper.
