Asylum, Refugee And Immigration Law Externship

Students may elect to enroll in this externship for 1 or 2 credits per semester, for up to a total of two semesters. Students will work with the Immigration Legal Services Program of the Archdiocese of Detroit to interview, screen and represent clients in asylum cases, plus a variety of other family and employment related immigration issues. Students will work directly with staff attorneys of the Program, as well as the Program’s pro bono attorneys. To receive credit, students must work at least 40 hours per credit per semester. They must meet all of the reasonable requirements of the Program staff. In addition, students will submit a midterm and end-of-term report to a designated faculty member, which should both report on their experiences and reflect on legal and ethical issues that arose during the term. The course will be graded as mandatory pass/fail by the designated faculty member. To enroll, students must have completed or be currently enrolled in the Asylum and Refugee Seminar and Trial Workshop.
