John Ramer, ’17
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, Ann Arbor, MI

Whereas his father spent his evenings welding to afford law school, John Ramer’s scholarships allowed him to focus solely on academics and take advantage of the unparalleled opportunities offered at Michigan Law.

John joined the Michigan Law Review and became president of the Federalist Society, co-president of the Michigan Law Veterans Society, and a member of the Campbell Moot Court Competition executive board.

Those experiences, combined with courses on appellate law with one sitting federal appellate judge—The Hon. Raymond Kethledge, ‘93—and one sitting Michigan Supreme Court justice—Justice Bridget Mary McCormack—showed John that he truly enjoyed legal writing.

Coming to Michigan, experiencing the collegiality of its student and alumni communities, and participating in the programs (both inside and outside of the classroom) made me the legal professional I am today,” says John. “I could not be more thankful for the opportunity to be here.”

He then parlayed an alumni connection into a 1L judicial internship with Judge Kethledge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and spent his 2L summer at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Washington, D.C.

A recipient of the 2018 Henry M. Bates Memorial Scholarship Award, John worked as a research assistant for the Michigan Solicitor General’s Office in Lansing, Michigan, before returning to Judge Kethledge’s chambers for a clerkship.

“Coming to Michigan, experiencing the collegiality of its student and alumni communities, and participating in the programs (both inside and outside of the classroom) made me the legal professional I am today,” says John. “I could not be more thankful for the opportunity to be here.”
