This course will survey contemporary topics at the intersection of technology, law, and society, such as surveillance, harassment, misinformation, predictive policing, and algorithmic bias. The course will examine how new technologies are designed and deployed and the consequences of those deployments for society and governance. We will center normative legal ideas around ethics and justice and will discuss how to evaluate the potential risks and harms of new technologies. Each week will connect prominent themes in technology with regulatory considerations, such as online harassment and free speech, predictive policing and disparate impact, and gig economies and worker rights.
