Public Interest Litigation Ethics
In this course, we will examine professional ethics and professional responsibility with a concentration on the practice of public interest law. We will utilize the Model Rules of Professional Conduct (Model Rules) and will use a variety of sources of guidance to help us understand the rules and their application. More specifically, we will identify and analyze ethical issues that arise in the practice of public interest law — public defense and prosecution, government lawyering, immigration, and civil rights cases. Among the issues we will address are client loyalty, communications, confidentiality, and conflicts of interest. We will also consider how our personal morality interacts with and impacts our professional ethical responsibilities.
