The seminar will focus on the rise of and purported reasons for book bans, the types of books, perspectives, and speech being controlled, the spill over into politics at various levels of government, and how different groups and individuals experience these issues and the good/harm being done by such exclusionary practices in the past, present and future in other countries as well as in the U.S. We will read sections of or full works that have been or are currently banned in different jurisdictions, discuss their possible significance/relevance and the ramifications on societ(ies) when certain voices, histories, or perspectives are silenced.
