Welcome to History of International Law! This course will offer you a bird's eye view of the discipline. Through it, you will be able to construct, deconstruct and re-imagine your understanding of international law as a product of concrete contexts and sociopolitical processes. Instead of seeing it as a series of isolated events connected through a single thread of [Western] incremental progress -- international law as the story of a few "great [white] men" -- this class will provide you with the tools to experience history in greater complexity, through different methodologies and perspectives. The course will engage with the history of international law critically, asking tough questions about its contingency, legitimacy and identity. The course will visit and revisit the sequences of international law's histories, seeking to (re)discover alternative narratives and valuable insights lost in the received understanding of international law.
