Frequently Asked Questions

All Michigan Law alumni and their registered guests are invited to attend this event in support of the Law School’s Black community.

  • Are LLM and SJD Recipients Invited?

Yes! All LLM and SJD graduates are welcome to attend the Black Alumni Reunion.

  • When Can I Register?

Registration will close on Friday, March 10, 2023. Please note we will not offer walk-in registration. Visit the Registration page for more information.

  • Are Discounts Available?

Yes! Alumni working in public interest law, emeritus alumni who graduated more than 50 years ago, and the classes of 2018 and 2019 all get 20% off all paid Reunion events. Graduates from the classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022 may attend the Reunion free of charge.

Please note that these discounts do not apply to the Butch Carpenter Scholarship Gala, which is hosted by the Black Law Students Association.

  • What Is the COVID-19 Policy for the Black Alumni Reunion?

The University of Michigan resumed its vibrant campus experience during the 2022–2023 term, supported by the high vaccination rate of the campus community. Local data shows that the majority of COVID-19 infections in the community since 2021 presented with either mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. While the University’s vaccination policy requires that all students, faculty, and staff have completed their primary COVID-19 vaccination series and one booster, Black Alumni Reunion attendees will not be asked to show proof of compliance with this policy.

The University’s recommendations for masking align with the CDC’s COVID-19 community level for Washtenaw County, where Ann Arbor is located. Michigan Law is a mask-friendly space; all guests are welcome to wear a mask, and we ask for such decisions to be respected.

  • How Do I Purchase Tickets to the Butch Carpenter Scholarship Gala?

Guests who would like to attend the annual Butch Carpenter Scholarship Gala, which is organized by the Black Law Students Association, will be able to purchase tickets during the Reunion registration process.

  • Can Children 12 and Under Attend?

Yes! While the Reunion’s programming is not oriented towards entertaining small children, alumni are welcome to bring children of all ages.

  • Will There Be Activities for Children 12 and Under?

While our Reunions primarily feature social events, intellectual programming, and experiences that appeal to adults, children of alumni are welcome to attend all programs. Please check the schedule for more information.

  • Are International Alumni Allowed to Attend?

Yes! Alumni and guests arriving from international locations must comply with the U-M and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requirements and guidelines. This University webpage keeps up with relevant information as details change.

  • Will Childcare Resources Be Available?

Michigan Law is not able to provide childcare services or make specific recommendations for providers. There are, however, many reputable third-party childcare services available in the Ann Arbor area.

  • What If I Need to Cancel?

Our cancellation with refund deadline is two weeks prior to Reunion. We will fully refund cancellations before the deadline; we will not refund cancellations after the deadline. We will make an exception for COVID-related cancellation requests after the deadline. If you have a COVID-related need to cancel after the deadline, please call our office directly at 734.615.4535.

  • What If the Law School (or University) Has to Cancel the Reunion?

If the University or the Law School determines that the Reunion must be canceled (due to changes in the COVID situation locally or nationally), we will give refunds to all registered guests. All hotel and travel cancellations are the responsibility of the alumni and their guests and should be made with the vendor directly.

  • Do I Need to Register for Each Individual Event?

We require registration for all events with an associated cost to attend, and the Black Law Students Association requires tickets to attend the Butch Carpenter Scholarship Gala. For all other events, registration is requested. Your advance registration helps us plan the best event experience for everyone.
