FAQs
-
What are my chances of getting into a PSI class if I've been waitlisted?
It depends on the class – in some cases, every student applicant is able to enroll in the PSI class of their choice; in other cases, more students apply than we are able to admit. We update class rosters regularly and make every effort to move students off of the waitlist quickly.
-
Can undergraduates take PSI classes?
We are only able to enroll graduate and professional students from the University of Michigan in PSI classes.
-
Do PSI classes repeat?
So far, PSI classes have not been repeated. In some cases, similar themes are addressed from one term to another.
-
Why are different course numbers listed for the same PSI class?
Even though PSI classes are administered through a home unit (the Law School), our classes are cross-listed through several partner units at U-M: the School of Education, the School of Social Work, the School of Public Health, the School of Public Policy, SEAS, the School of Information, the School of Nursing, and LSA-Department of Economics.
-
How do faculty members select students for PSI classes?
PSI classes bring together students with a wide range of interests, backgrounds, and skills who want to learn to collaborate, problem solve, apply human-centered design thinking, and develop solutions to the class challenge.
-
Do PSI classes count toward my home unit's graduation or degree requirements?
You should check with the graduate or curriculum advisor at your home school or college to find out if a PSI class will meet your degree or graduation credit requirements.
-
Do PSI classes have a final project or capstone event?
Yes, all PSI classes end with a final capstone project. Depending on your class, the capstone might be a panel presentation, a design solution, a template, draft legislation, a video, or something else.
-
May I contribute an idea for a PSI class project?
Yes. For example, the idea for our class on Ending Targeted Surveillance of the Black Community in Detroit was proposed by U-M Law School alumna Danielle Coleman (Class of 2020). If you have suggestions for a class topic, please let us know: problemsolving@umich.edu.
