Indexing Forced Labor | University of Michigan Law School

Class description

What if we could measure the amount of forced labor used in each individual construction project? What might it look like if, in addition to knowing a building's carbon footprint, we knew the amount of exploited labor involved in the creation and maintenance of that structure? In this course, multi-disciplinary teams of students will examine approaches for developing sets of indices that convey the degree to which a specific process may contain the output of forced labor. As a class, we will build on index systems developed in other fields, including those for community adaptive capacity and consumer product environmental impact. Students will leverage problem solving skills and insights from fields including engineering, law, business, heath sciences, and policy to develop innovative solutions to an identified challenge in this area.

Instructors

Bridgette Carr

Bridgette Carr is a Clinical Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. She was a PSI co-instructor for Combatting Human Trafficking within Vulnerable Families in the United States, Economic Integration for Individuals in the Refugee Resettlement Program, Identifying Victims of Human Trafficking within Health Care Systems, and LGBTQ+ Communities and Human Trafficking, and Designing a Rigorous and Joyful Grad School. She co-teaches the Problem Solving bootcamp.

Seth Guikema

Seth Guikema is a Professor in the departments of Industrial & Operations Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan. He is also a Professor II (adjunct) in the Department of Safety, Economics, and Planning at the University of Stavanger as well as a Data Science Research Fellow at One Concern, Inc. The research in Professor Guikema’s group is described in this web site, particularly under the Research tab.
