The Election Administration seminar will survey the nuts and bolts of America's democratic process. From voter registration to absentee voting to recounts and redistricting, the seminar will use Michigan as a lens to introduce students to the complexities of divvying up voters, maintaining registration lists, and casting and counting ballots. Readings will include case law, administrative documents, and social science papers, as well as firsthand accounts of the election administration process. The course will feature guest speakers, with a focus on identifying how advocates have harnessed the law to surmount real-world ballot access barriers. Students will submit a final paper or project aimed at improving election administration in the state. In the long term, the Election Administration seminar aims to create a community of Michigan Law students who are interested in election administration work and to lower the barrier to entry for Michigan Law students who want to participate in Michigan's election administration and voter protection efforts.
